Managing Your Career Course Was Terrific

The participants in the Managing Your Career class were fabulous and here are some quick comments from the group after attending this course focused on helping individuals discover more about their strengths and preferences and then how to apply that to finding their perfect work!

Thank you again for a great workshop! I had a great time at the course and know that my friend also thoroughly enjoyed her learning experience. I had an opportunity to get a 'refresher' on some career specifics and a validation on many of my future goals. I plan on spending some time this afternoon reviewing the workshop notebook and look forward to hearing from you on your evaluation of my resume.
PS: I took action and also called NHTI an am meeting an adviser later this week to go after those additional skill sets!

College Students Often Fail In Their Job Search

Here's an excerpt of what's happening across U.S. colleges from the article linked below: "Then there's the question of whether pricey bachelor's degrees are even worth it. For starters, only one in five college graduates had a job at the time of commencement in 2009. And with more students continuing their education to the master's level, there are concerns that the B.A. is being "devalued"."

I love doing career coaching for individuals age 16-65 and I'm always passionate when a system fails and individual. As I work with an organization I'm affiliated with- RLS Collegiate- the issue of colleges providing the right skills and knowledge along with their ability to help grads obtain jobs is becoming more concerning as seen above. Who wants to spend a huge amount of money upwards of $80,000 for their child to go to college only to have it wasted because it wasn't the right program, out of line with the students passion or because the career services area was sub-par. Here are a few quick thoughts about a recent article I read and also the link to the full article below.

Concern: Many colleges place little to no focus on truly helping college students figure out what they "want to be" when they grow up.

Solution: Find a college that excels at this as there are some out there!

Concern: Even more concerning is the lack of resources they spend on college students finding jobs after college even after a parent/young adult has spent anywhere between $80-$120,000 on their college education. Ask your childs future or current school what they do along the lines of career development.

Solution: Ask if they have a formalized program like RLS Collegiate or any other and see what they say. Also find out when they start working with the student- Freshman year, Junior Year, Senior Year?

Concern: The increasing dissatisfaction businesses have with college degree grads and the high rate of dropout rate of 55%.

Solution: Have your child meet and work with a qualified career counselor who has been in the working world before they pick and go to school or even during. Career counselors can help your child assess their passion, their values, their skills and desires and can source the right school and programs to support that passion.

Is Fear Preventing You from Finding Your Dream Job in 2010?

Taking action is key and here are the steps you can take to move forward- Part 1 of 3.

We’ve all read the economic reports and have seen the unemployment/underemployment statistics. I often wonder aside from the actual numbers if companies might not be fueling this frenzy of fear. Using this tactic of placing fear in their employees by having the media bombard the 86% of the population that are fully employed with the idea that “I can’t leave my job because there are no other jobs out there for me right now.” Over the last 60 days I’ve worked with more clients who report being stuck, being afraid and feeling burned out than ever before.

Here’s the good news; you don’t have to be stuck and the way to move through fear is to take ACTION.

Here are 7 things you can do NOW to take action (there is more you can do but this is a great place to start) and go after your career dreams:

1. Take a breath and clear your mind of what you do now and what is happening in
your job, your family and the economy.

2. Know Yourself-Using tools such as the MBTI and the values and environment
assessments are a great place to get started. Knowing yourself here = knowing
where your best energy comes from, understanding what values drive you and what
type of environments are most appealing are the basis for where you want to go.

3. Get a Career Coach if you don’t have access or an easy way to do this for yourself.

4. Inventory Your Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Strengths.

5. Review your work experience- graph your career history from the beginning and rate your job satisfaction on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest for each job you’ve had. Figure out why you scored the jobs the way you did.

6. Create a simplified personal objective statement of what you want to be doing, i.e. What do I want to do? Here’s mine; I want to help individuals of all ages and career levels find the job/career of their dreams and help them increase their confidence to achieve those dreams.

7. Dust off your resume- or have a career coach create your resume for you and highlight your accomplishments, your capabilities and what value you add to a COMPANIES BOTTOM LINE.

After you’ve taken these steps you need to do the 3 R’s- rest, review and reflect. Additional steps will be coming in the next few weeks so stay tuned for more you can do to start moving toward your perfect career.
